We used to stand in the driveway and my brothers would unfold and hoist the flag, and my family would say the pledge of allegiance. There was really idealism at the time that, this society was going to create a free world, with perfect love and perfect democracy. This is a vision I grew up with, a sense of innocence and possibilities in the world.*
Living in London in “exile” for the past ten years, Cantor’s current work reflects her search for her cultural roots -- through her art she explores themes such as Detroit soul music, the American Hopi Indians, and ancient Judaic theosophy. For this particular project, “American Dream”, she will be creating multi-layered sculptural drawings, extending her vision (from the fifth-dimension) into three-dimensional space.
An internationally acclaimed American artist, Cantor has exhibited widely in museums and private galleries throughout Europe and the United States.
Ellen Cantor works in a variety of media and is recognised for her highly individual drawings, videos and storybooks. Her work explores and often disrupts the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, the romantic and the pornographic, the public and the private, the tragic and the humorous.
In all of Cantor’s works one sees the continual and desperate struggle to maintain - or perhaps regain - faith in the face of the destruction and collapse of her vital belief systems: nationalism, progress, goodness, love ...
